WWE has teased a solid matchup on Smackdown that could be waiting for us at Summerslam 2019. Randy Orton earned a pinfall win against The WWE Champion in a tag team match that could set up a much-anticipated match at the biggest of the summer. The New Day was originally scheduled to have a celebration segment after their win at Extreme Rules. Kofi Kingston is the WWE Champion whereas Big E and Xavier Woods are the reigning Smackdown tag team champions.
The trio got interrupted by the heel team of Samoa Joe, Elias, and Randy Orton to set up a six-man tag team match. Orton had an added target on Kofi Kingston since he wanted to get a title shot at Summerslam. Elias distracted Kofi by digesting a Trouble in Paradise by the end of the match which allowed Randy Orton to pin Kofi with an RKO. It was the first time that the champ earned a pinfall loss since Wrestlemania that might not be a good sign for him ahead of Summerslam.
However, wwe.com hinted that the champ must be ready for another title defense,
“Question his willingness to battle everyone who wants a piece of him; it’s certainly taken its toll. Question his luck if you must; he’s certainly had a little bit of it along the way. But if you continue to question Kofi Kingston as WWE Champion, you simply haven’t been paying attention. It’s a lesson Samoa Joe learned the hard way tonight. He isn’t the first. And the way things are going, he likely won’t be the last.”
Summerslam emanates from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with the 32nd edition of the show. This is the second biggest event of the year that comes up with the bigger storyline angles with huge implications. Smackdown started buildups for it from last night’s episode onwards indicating another huge match for the PPV event between Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton for the WWE title. The main event of the show will feature Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship as declared on WWE Raw.
